since 1996. After completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology and social
work, Miller gained extensive experience in policy research and development, planning,
researching and developing state policy to address health and human services issues working for Texas statewide elected officials.
Ms. Miller serves on numerous boards throughout the state of Texas. In 2009, Ms. Miller
received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Social
Workers, Texas Chapter. In May 2010, she was granted the Honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service by the Board of Regents of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth,Texas.

1d07c857-165a-4aba-a26f-cafd20f448cc.jpg Dr. Andy Keller, CEO of Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute (Dallas)is a psychologist with more than 20 years of experience in behavioral health programs, policy and financing. He has worked with individuals, children and families through community based programs such as the Mental Health Center of Denver. He helped develop a state level health plan with a Medicaid HMO in Colorado. He has helped many local communities put evidence-based and innovative care approaches in place to improve treatment and outcomes for people with mental illness. As Chief Executive Officer of the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, Dr. Keller supports policies and programs that help all Texans obtain effective and efficient mental health care when and where they need it.

Involvement at State conference

The students are excited about participating in a “Welcome Introduction” on Thursday night during the Social session of the 99th Annual State Conference in Plano, Texas immediately following the Opening General Session. Each university student organization will present a poster with pictures of their university and include pictures of their student group. Each group will briefly introduce themselves and talk about some of the projects they have been involved with at their university.
Also, the students from each university group will create a Basket to be raffled off to make money for HUGS. The announcement of winners will be made during the Best of Texas Awards Dinner on Friday evening.to announce the winners?

Since 1987, the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) has administered the Professional Assessment and Certification program, which measures competencies of professionals and awards certifications to those who pass assessments and meet other requirements. Whether you are a new professional or seasoned veteran, validate your professional expertise through the AAFCS competency examination system. These national competency exams also meet a major requirement for obtaining corresponding professional certifications. At the AAFCS-Texas state conference, you can sit for one of five exams, each corresponding to one of the five certifications:

Assessment administration will follow Saturday Brunch, April 1, 2017 from 1:15-5:15p.m. A one (1) day conference registration required. Saturday evening hotel rooms available at a rate of $79.

What’s Happening?
Honors & Retirements

  • As you may know, Gay Nell McGinnis, CFCS, retired on September 30, 2016. Gay Nell has been an AAFCS member since 1975 and joined the AAFCS staff in 2005. During her tenure at AAFCS, she led the implementation of the recommendations from the Annual Conference Redesign Task Force and has provided diligent oversight for the Annual Conference.
  • Dr. Judy Warren retires after 36 years from Texas A&M AfriLife Extension Service on January 31. 
  • February 28th is retirement date for Patti Rambo, M. S., CFCS, CNWE
  • Director of The Curriculum Center for Family and Consumer Sciences
    College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech University.
  • Carrie Brazeal, CFCS was honored with the Distinguished Career award during College Station for Extension’s Superior Service awards presentation; ….what a way to end her career!
  • Angela McCorkle received the Extension Superior Service team award for 4-H-FCS 101.
  • Dr. Joyce Cavanagh, CFCS, CPFFE, is receiving “Your’re the Tops” award from the Prenatal clinic of Brazos County for her outstanding community leadership and service.
